Can a baby sock really act as a security blanket for our cat?

One day some friends brought over their neworn baby and left a baby sock at our house. Our cat seemed to like playing with the sock, so it has become a permanent toy (in fact, we've bought her new, more colorful socks!). Besides playing with it (she can really throw it high in the air!), she occasionally lets out a loud meow and can usually be seen then carrying around the sock in her mouth. It then ends up either in her food bowl, the litter box, or our bed where she sleeps with us. Is she having some kind of mental meltdown and using it as a security blanket?

It probably just feels nice and soft to her. My cat loves to nap on ANYTHING soft. I find her in my closet, on my bed, on her bed (she also has a special fleece blanket), on my clean clothes. Anything soft that smells nice. She will not sleep on dirty clothes or on her blanket when it gets dirty. She also carries around a little mouse I got her. I find the mouse everywhere.
